Journal History

Works in Progress in Embedded Computing Journal (WiPiEC) was established in 2015 as an outlet for the Work in Progress (WiP) sessions of several prominent conferences in embedded computing, including:

  • The Mediterranean Conference on Embedded Computing (MECO)
  • The International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems and Internet of Things (CPS&IoT)
  • The Summer School on Cyber-Physical Systems and Internet of Things (SSCPS&IoT)

Between 2015 and 2022, WiPiEC functioned as a journal distributed to members of the organizing consortium and participants of these events.

In April 2023, WiPiEC transitioned to a fully open-access model. All previously published materials, dating back to 2015, were made freely available under an open license.

Since August 2023, WiPiEC has also included contributions from the Work in Progress sessions of:

  • The Euromicro Conference Series on Digital System Design (DSD)
  • The Euromicro Conference Series on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications (SEAA)

In addition to publishing papers from these affiliated events, WiPiEC now welcomes regular submissions throughout the year from the broader embedded computing community.

Publication Identifiers

The current publisher of the Works in Progress in Embedded Computing Journal (WiPiEC) is a consortium composed of the following organizations:

  • Mediterranean Excellence in Computing and Ontology (MECOnet)
  • Montenegrin Association for New Technologies (MANT)
  • EUROMICRO – an international scientific, engineering, and educational organization for Information Technology and Microelectronics

ISSN (International Standard Serial Number): 2980-7298

COBBIS.CG-ID: 25189380 (National Library of Montenegro "Đurđe Crnojević")

WiPiEC will try to obtain its DOI system. In meantime the DOI associated from used Archiving and Repositories can be used.

Publication Frequency

Since 2023, WiPiEC has been published online twice per year:

  • Issue 1 is a continuous volume published throughout the year. Articles are made available online as soon as they are ready, following peer review, to minimize delays in public dissemination.
  • Issue 2 consists of a collection of articles from targeted events. These papers undergo standard selection and peer-review processes and are published together as a thematic issue.

From 2015 to 2022, the journal was published annually as a single issue.

Types of Contributions

WiPiEC publishes full papers, short papers and technical notes (design ideas). More about types of the papers with description of their contact can be found in Submission session.

Open Access Policy

WiPiEC is a Diamond Open Access journal, meaning there are no fees for authors or readers. All content is made freely and immediately available online, in line with the principle that unrestricted access to research fosters wider dissemination and a greater global exchange of knowledge.

There is no embargo on the journal’s publications. Submission, acceptance, and publication dates are clearly indicated on the PDF version of each article.

Authors are encouraged to make their supporting data openly available in recommended repositories. For a list of general and subject-specific repositories that meet our peer review standards.

Indexing and Quality Control

The WiPiEC is indexed by the following libraries, publication portals or libraries:

To ensure permanency of all publications, this journal also utilises CLOCKSS, and LOCKSS archiving systems to create permanent archives for the purposes of preservation and restoration.

The WiPiEC has strong Quality Control Strategy consists of Internal and External Quality Control

Internal Quality Control is defined by Chief Editors, Editorial Board and Quality Control, Legal and Ethical Committee, with the main principles:

  • Monitoring the quality process from submission to publication and response
  • Minimized plagiarism
  • Minimized hyperpublishing of authors
  • Minimized hyperauthorship in submissions
  • Minimized self-citation
  • Minimized endogeny
  • Respect for copyright rights
  • Adherence to academic and research ethics
  • and other law and ethics issues

Important issue of Internal Quality Control is plagiarism check that should be done

  • by authors, before submission, is highly recommended.
  • by technical editor by using some of the software as CopyLeaks® and Dupli Checker software.

External Quality Control will be mainly based on response and audit by reference organizations, libraries, scientific databases according to their strict rules.

Archiving and Repositories

WiPiEC encourages authors to archive their data and associated files in trusted repositories to ensure transparency, reproducibility, and long-term preservation. Below is a list of recommended repositories that meet our peer-review and archiving standards. If you would like to suggest a repository for inclusion, please contact the editorial team.

There are two main types of repositories, each serving slightly different purposes:

  • Versioned repositories: These host multiple versions of files as they evolve throughout development.
  • Preservation or institutional repositories: These focus on long-term preservation of a specific set of deposited files.

Authors are required to make the version of files referenced in their publication available in at least one repository that satisfies the criteria below. Ideally, files should be available in both types of repositories.

A versioned repository should:

  • Allow the deposit of files under an appropriate open license
  • Provide a unique, persistent identifier referencing a specific version of the files (e.g., a tagged state in a repository tree)
  • Have a clear backup policy and terms of service that do not permit deletion without prior notice
  • Demonstrate a sustainable operation model
  • Allow the addition of a publication DOI after the article is published

A preservation repository should:

  • Support file deposits under a suitable open license
  • Provide a unique, persistent identifier (such as a DOI) for the archived files
  • Publish and implement a long-term preservation strategy

Recommended Repositories for WIPiEC are, with the list being updated

  • GitHub – for version control and open-source development
  • Zenodo – EU Open Research Repository, integrates with GitHub and supports DOIs
  • MECOnet Events and Publishing Repository – maintained by MECOnet, a founding member of the WiPiEC journal consortium
  • Recognized preprint servers (e.g., arXiv, HAL and others) are allowed, upon authors’ disclose in the submission cover letter.

WiPiEC only displays advertisements that are relevant to the journal's scope and of potential interest to its readership, such as announcements of upcoming conferences or calls for papers. All advertising space is provided free of charge. The editor and publisher reserve the right to decline or remove advertisements at their discretion.

All advertisements will be clearly marked with a heading to distinguish them from editorial content.

If you would like to propose an advertisement, please contact the editorial team. All advertisement images must be provided by the submitting party.
