Journal History

The Works in Progress in Embedded Computing Journal (WiPiEC) was established in 2015 to provide a publication platform for contributions presented during the Work in Progress sessions of international conferences dedicated to embedded computing and related technologies.

During its initial years, the journal primarily served participants of scientific events organized within the Mediterranean Excellence in Computing and Ontology (MECOnet) community, including the Mediterranean Conference on Embedded Computing (MECO), the International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems and Internet of Things (CPS&IoT), and the Summer School on Cyber-Physical Systems and Internet of Things (SSCPS&IoT).

From 2015 until 2022, WiPiEC was distributed primarily within the conference community and among members of the organizing consortium. Throughout this period, the journal established its editorial procedures, publication workflow, and scientific identity while supporting early dissemination of innovative research in embedded computing.

In April 2023, WiPiEC adopted a fully Diamond Open Access publishing model. All previously published articles were made freely available online under an open license, ensuring unrestricted public access to the journal's complete archive.

Since August 2023, the journal has expanded its collaboration to include additional international conferences, including the Euromicro Conference on Digital System Design (DSD) and the Euromicro Conference on Software Engineering and Advanced Applications (SEAA).

Today, WiPiEC accepts submissions from researchers worldwide throughout the year. While maintaining strong cooperation with scientific conferences through thematic issues and invited submissions, the journal operates as an independent international scholarly journal serving the broader embedded computing community.

The Editorial Board continuously develops the journal in accordance with international standards for scholarly publishing, aiming to increase scientific quality, international visibility, editorial transparency, and long-term impact.

The journal assigns a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to every published article to ensure persistent identification, reliable citation, and long-term discoverability. Article metadata are deposited with Crossref to support scholarly communication and citation linking.

Publication Frequency

WiPiEC is published twice per year in an online-only format.

Since 2023, the journal has adopted a publication model consisting of two regular issues each calendar year, designed to provide timely dissemination of research while maintaining rigorous editorial and peer-review standards.

Issue 1 follows a continuous publication model. Accepted manuscripts are published individually immediately after completing editorial processing, including peer review, copyediting, proofreading, metadata preparation, DOI registration, and final production. This approach minimizes publication delays and ensures that new scientific results become available to the research community as soon as possible.

Issue 2 is primarily dedicated to thematic collections, including selected papers originating from partner conferences, workshops, special research initiatives, or invited thematic sections. Every manuscript submitted for this issue undergoes the same editorial evaluation and independent peer-review process as regular submissions.

From 2015 until 2022, WiPiEC was published as a single annual issue associated primarily with the Work in Progress sessions of affiliated international conferences.

The Editorial Board may also publish special issues devoted to emerging research topics when considered beneficial to the scientific community.

Article Types

WiPiEC publishes several categories of scholarly contributions to accommodate different forms of scientific and engineering research.

Full Papers

Full Papers present complete reports of original scientific research. They should include a clear research objective, comprehensive methodology, experimental validation or theoretical analysis, discussion of results, and well-supported conclusions. Full Papers are expected to make a significant contribution to the advancement of embedded computing or related disciplines.

Short Papers

Short Papers communicate concise but scientifically significant research results. They may present preliminary findings, innovative concepts, proof-of-concept implementations, pilot studies, or focused investigations that merit rapid dissemination but do not require the length of a Full Paper.

Technical Notes

Technical Notes describe innovative engineering solutions, software or hardware designs, implementation techniques, benchmarking studies, development methodologies, practical experiences, or design concepts that provide value to researchers and practitioners.

Technical Notes should emphasize technical originality and practical relevance while maintaining scientific rigor.

Detailed manuscript preparation requirements, formatting instructions, and recommended article structures are provided in the Author Guidelines.
